Remember this advice isn't official. There is no guarantee it will reflect your experience because university applications can change between years. Check the official Cambridge and Oxford websites for more accurate information on this year's application format and the required tests.

Also, someone else's experience may not reflect your own. Most interviews are more like conversations than tests and like, any conversation, they are quite interactive.

Interview Format

My interview was in mid December. I was greeted at the porter's lodge and told to wait in the auditorium, where all the other interview students were waiting. I got talking to them, and a lot of them were going for the same subject as me. I had already received a timetable with the timings of each interview, as well as the members of staff that would perform the interview.

I had three in total: One physics interview sandwiched between two maths interviews. I didn't need to take anything into the interview, as they had pens with them. Each interview was about half an hour, and was entirely focused around maths questions.

What happened in your interview? How did you feel?

For the two maths interviews I had, each was entirely focused around maths questions. There were two interviewers in each interview, and both asked two questions, so four questions total. I was given lots of time to think, although I tried to think out loud as much as possible. The questions were all A-level standard, and whenever I didn't understand something they would try and give hints to guide me.

The physics interview was similar although they did ask a question about a physics summer school I attended.

How did you prepare?

I got mock interviewsorganised through my school. Although these were not great at predicting the types of questions that would come up in an interview, they were particularly helpful at reducing the nerves that I got from being in an interview situation. Since the interviews were entirely maths questions, it was helpful going though some STEP questions in advance.

Looking back, what advice would you give to your past self?

Don't ever start overthinking how it went after (or even during) your interview. The fact that you made it to an interview is an achievement in itself! After that, you've done all the hard work, so treat yourself :)
