Remember this advice isn't official. There is no guarantee it will reflect your experience because university applications can change between years. Check the official Cambridge and Oxford websites for more accurate information on this year's application format and the required tests.

Also, someone else's experience may not reflect your own. Most interviews are more like conversations than tests and like, any conversation, they are quite interactive.

Interview Format

After going through the Porter's lodge I followed posters that directed me to a room full of other waiting interviewees. My name was called and I was escorted by a student to a different room where I was given a poem to analyse for 20 minutes. When my time was up I was again escorted to a hallway where I waited until my two interviewers were ready for me.

For my second interview (about myself/my perosnal statement etc) I was again escorted from the waiting room to another hallway until my interviewers were ready.

What happened in your interview? How did you feel?

In my first interview we discussed the poem and my interviewer told me to feel comfortable in asking her to clarify words that I didn't know the definition of, which I did. She told me about the poet and the context that the poem was published in. We analysed the poem together, and I was free to disagree with or expand upon her own analyses.

In my second interview, with a different set of interviewers, I was asked about books that I had mentioned in my personal statement and during other parts of the application process. I was also asked about my engagement with literature more broadly. I hated this interview because the interviewers pulled the "good cop/bad cop" thing on me and the bad cop said "fine" in a deadpan voice after every answer I gave.

How did you prepare?

My school had organised for me to have a mock interviewwith an Oxford Lingustics professor (which went terribly so I can't say it was much help).

Looking back, what advice would you give to your past self?

I genuinely thought my second interview went really badly. There really is no telling what the interviewers think of you until January so try not to stress out about it too much.
